CUPERTINO, CA -- October 13, 2022 -- StrongAuth, Inc. (dba StrongKey), an innovator in open-source solutions using public-key cryptography, announced that its Product Attestation Authority (PAA) has been approved for production use by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (the Alliance) for use in attesting IoT devices that choose to comply with the industry-unifying Matter 1.0 specification.
“StrongKey is providing a significant service in the continued momentum of Matter and its promise of a secure, simple and interoperable IoT,” said Chris LaPre, Head of Technology at the Connectivity Standard’s Alliance. “Device Attestation Certificates for Matter approved devices are the lynchpin to ensuring device authentication is done quickly and securely in the background as new devices enter a network.”
With the publishing of StrongKey’s PAA to the Alliance’s blockchain-based Distributed Compliance Ledger (DCL), smart-home device manufacturers have a choice of digital certificate solutions to enable their products to interoperate securely with other Matter-certified products and solutions.
Matter 1.0 requires the use of industry-standard digital certificates – known as Device Attestation Certificates (DACs) in the specification – within smart-home IoT devices. With the use of DACs, the authenticity and integrity of IoT devices are attested cryptographically before they may join, and operate within, smart-home networks. Consumers worldwide are delivered high levels of security without the need to verify every connection of every IoT device in their home – the Matter specification defines every step of this process before the IoT device is validated and accepted.
"Matter is a very important development," says StrongKey CTO Arshad Noor. "Much as Ethernet and TCP/IP unified communication standards for the internet nearly 4 decades ago, Matter has the potential to deliver similar unifying standards for IoT devices. Its mandate for advanced security capability as a baseline requirement makes it one of the first specifications to address the current deficit in IoT cybersecurity. The development of this standard, as well as the response of the IoT industry to integrate advanced security capability in their products, will deliver significant benefits to businesses and consumers. Today, we are a step closer to achieving these goals, having delivered the tools required to assure trust in the Matter ecosystem.”
